Local Grocery Makes Low-Calorie Snack Right in the Store
October 29, 2010
Just about every evening a crowd gathers in the Baesler’s
Market bakery as customers watch Yoncha Wright turning out
airy snack discs called Magic-Pop. “We’ve had
the Magic Pop machine for about six months now and people
still love to watch the snacks being made,” Wright said.
Six inches in diameter, this light, fresh-popped snack food is a blend of wheat,
brown rice and corn that is all-natural, low in carbohydrates
and sodium, has no fat or cholesterol and comes in at only 15
calories.
Baesler’s owner Bob Baesler said, “We
invested in the Magic Pop machine because it was unique to the
area and because we knew our nutrition-conscious customers would
really like this product. It was developed by a South Korean couple
who had been in the food business for years, and the product and
the machines are now marketed around the world.”
The store currently offers the snacks in plain and onion flavors.
They can be eaten plain with soups and salads, but Connie
Reynolds, who demonstrates products for the market, gets creative,
topping the discs with sweet or savory spreads like peanut
butter and jelly, honey, cream cheese, hummus, salsa and any
number of variations. “We even spray them with butter-flavored
cooking spray and sprinkle them with cinnamon sugar, and people
say it tastes just like an elephant ear,” Reynolds said.
Summing up Magic Pop’s appeal, a Baesler’s customer said, “For
how light they are, they’re really filling - great when you
just want something crunchy. But it’s O.K. because you know
they’re so low in calories.”
